In January 2020 Bendigo band Four Lions commenced recording “Wide Awake” at Headgap studios in Thornbury Victoria. Shann told me he’d written a hundred songs for the record, which turned out to be the first of many marathons in the creation of the album. The first tracks were down before the pandemic shut down recording in March, but it would be 18 months before the final tracking was completed. I made a book from photos collected across the recording sessions, rehearsals and launch shows in late 2021. The title “New scars under our fallen skies” lifted a lyric out of the opening track. Its a remarkable album, made at a time of great upheaval. Five years on much has changed: two band members have departed, Headgap Studios burned down last Christmas, and the publisher of my “New Scars” book shut down last summer. That first edition is a collectors item now. Dogs bark, the carnival moves on. Four Lions just started their new record with Finn Keane a few weeks back. Maybe there’s another book in that one.
